The Springvale Road rail crossing at Nunawading has been a blight for rail patrons, car drivers and pedestrians alike. The level crossing was one of the busiest in Melbourne. More than 50,000 vehicles, 218 trains and around 5,000 pedestrians shared the same road space every day at this location. The project has removed the level crossing, lowered the rail line by eight metres and relocated the station to the west side of Springvale Road, all in a minimum of time.
The project, now drawing to a close, has been a delight to photograph for it provided many opportunities for making a comprehensive collection of images I am pleased with.
The images are, I hope, a permanent record of the many people who brought their skills and expertise together to transform a traffic blackspot into a safe and attractive suburban station in a minimum of time. I have to thank all those involved in the project for the unfettered access and co-operation which had made photographing this project a delight.
